Pictured Above: Right lower eyelid entropion
Entropion of the eyelid is one of the most common eyelid malpositions usually affecting the lower eyelids. The lower eyelid turns in towards the eye causing the lashes to hit the colored part of the eye. Sometimes the lashes will pull below the colored part of the eye. Patients with entropion will complain of eye irritation, tearing and blurry vision especially when they are reading.
The most common cause of entropion is aging changes secondary to laxity of the lower eyelid, and detachment of the lower eyelid muscle called the lower eyelid retractors. Very often after ocular surgery like cataract surgery the lower eyelid can turn inwards. There are other types of entropion which may require medical treatment prior to surgery. Entropion can usually be fixed successfully with surgery.
